Important information for Sellers of Quran Manuscripts:  From what we have seen, sellers of Islamic manuscripts seem to fall into three broad categories.  Auction houses, dealers and  people who have "inherited" manuscripts and are intending to sell them.

While the dealers are usually aware of the market dynamics, many sellers we have encountered in the "inheritance" category seem to have convinced themselves that anything handwritten and dating back a few hundred years is "priceless" and worth millions of dollars.  This is indeed not the case.  

Sellers need to understand that rarity of a manuscript depends on many factors such as numbers of copies produced, patronage, condition, scribe and a host of other factors.

Sellers also need to be aware that there are restrictions in most countries pertaining to export of manuscripts produced beyond a certain number of years.  For example, in France you need to get an export permit if you intend to sell a manuscript more than 50 years old out of France.  Sellers are advised to check the laws in their own countries.
